Creationists Claim Scientific Support for Genesis

Nothing new there. But you really have to wonder how the American public became so ignorant about science and evolution? According to an ABC poll, 60 percent of Americans believe that God created the world in six days. That is so embarrassing!

And that kind of mentality has lead to the creation of The Creation Museum, set to open on Memorial Day in northern Kentucky, and which will display dinosaurs cohabiting the planet with man. So what’s wrong with that picture? Jeesh!!

Read the story, watch the video from ABC News, and visit the Web site of Answers in Genesis (the organization behind the museum). The latter site will explain to visitors how the Biblical account of creation is supported by science, while vilifying leading modern-day evolutionists (and scientists) such as Stephen Jay Gould and Richard Dawkins.

Selected excerpts from the video:
ABC reporter Dan Harris: "The stakes are high. The museum argues that evolution jeopardizes people’s belief in the Bible, and leads to social ills like pornography and abortion."

Dr. Jason Lisle of Answers in Genesis: "If you have an evolutionary worldview, why should you have things like absolute morality? Why would it be wrong to kill someone? I’m not saying that evolutionists aren’t moral, I’m saying they have no logical reason to be moral."
Disclaimer: If it’s not already abundantly clear, you should know that I’m a fervent believer in evolution and my religious beliefs hover somewhere between agnosticism and atheism.

Nobody seems to include it in opinion polls, but I believe the majority of Americans also do not believe in acceleration due to gravity, or that the area of a circle is 3.14 times the radius squared. Although all my education has been in evolutionary biology, I find the absence of interest in everyday mathematics and physics even more troubling.

I also think if scientists started to discuss evolution in terms of population biology, with all the math and modeling that supports it, the average non-scientist would respect evolution more, or at least be less willing to argue with it.

By the way, I'm a regular reader of your blog, and enjoy what you're doing here very much.

Rebecca: Thank you for your very kind comments. I'm glad you enjoy reading my blog, silly as it can be at times. It's always nice to meet another West Virginia blogger, especially one who has interests similar to yours.

As you know, my ranting about the Creation Museum was quite a bit different from what I normally write about, but that has really hit a nerve with me. The state of science education in the U.S. is really pathetic. I like your idea of stressing population biology as part of evolutionary teaching, but that seems to be asking a lot of the American education system these days. I would like to see more emphasis on basic ecology in high school, but that's probably a pipe dream.
