Cockfighting in West Virginia

I had no idea that cockfighting (the pitting of one rooster against another in aggressive and sometimes mortal battles) occurred anywhere in West Virginia, but apparently it does. It’s illegal, but only a misdemeanor if caught, and is "rarely enforced." The Humane Society is pushing to make this "crudest type of fun" a felony in West Virginia, as it now is in 36 other States.

I've had people come here asking to buy roosters from me who made no bones about the fact they wanted them for cockfighting. Reporting them to the sheriff would be a good way to get my house burned down. I won't give a rooster to anyone unless I know the people and know that they keep a real backyard laying flock. It's a problem throughout rural America. Dogfighting is still practiced here and many other places too.

I had no idea cockfighting was still such a rampant problem in rural America. Dogfighting?

Yeah, deliberately raising dogs to be viscious and throwing them into a ring together just like a cock fight. Dog fighting, cock fighting, methamphetamine cooking, it tends to be the same social circles. Rural America is no stranger to organized crime. Local sheriffs departments tend to be vastly understaffed and underfunded; in an unfortunate minority of counties they are actually corrupt and complicit. The rest of us just keep our heads down and stay as far away from it all as possible.

But this could be a whole nuther blog...
