Quail Hunting: The Sport of “Billionaires and Good Old Boys”

Here’s an enlightening story from USA Today on the culture of quail (or, more properly, Northern Bobwhite) hunting in the American South. The owner of a Georgia plantation that charges $695 per day for the privilege of hunting says that "most of his clients are affluent, middle-aged Republican men with multi-generational ties to the sport." Quail populations and the number of hunters have both declined significantly since 1975, quail by 60-65 percent and hunters by nearly 85 percent. It remains to be seen whether Vice-President Cheney's misadventures while quail hunting will enhance or tarnish this sports image.
