My fascination with birds dates to earliest childhood. Entries in my high school senior yearbook profess my interest in ornithology. Birds and their conservation were the focus of a 33-year career as a professional wildlife biologist with the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service that took me from the westernmost Aleutian Islands to the political intrigue of Washington, D.C. In retirement, birds remain my constant obsession.

Just noticed in your profile that you worked out in the western aleutians; I spent a winter out on Shemya studying Emperor Geese back in 2003--where were you at?

I was in the Aleutians from December 1971 to August 1976. The first 18 months was courtesy of the U.S. Navy. After getting out of the Navy in September 1973, I went to work for the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service as a biological technician, later wildlife biologist, stationed at Adak, thanks to Vernon Byrd. After spending the winter of '73-'74 in Adak, I flew to Attu in late March to care for a captive flock of Aleutian Canada Geese at the old Coast Guard Loran Station there. In early May we transported the geese to Agattu Island via the R/V Aleutian Tern. Charlie Craighead and I spent the next three months living in an old fox trappers cabin on Aga Cove while watching over the geese, shooting the occasional arctic fox, and documenting the flora and fauna of the island. I returned to Agattu for part of the summer of 1975. Much of the summer of 1976 was spent on Alaid and Nizki islands shooting and trapping arctic foxes in preparation for the eventual re-introduction of Aleutian Canada Geese. Parts of the summers of 1974-1976 were spent on Buldir Island assisting with the capture and banding of Aleutian Canada Geese. In the mid-1980s I spent a summer as part of a field crew circumventing the Islands of Four Mountains censusing nesting seabirds. So you see, I've had my share of Aleutian adventures, and still have fond memories of Emperor Geese. The winter of 2003 found me working in the USFWS's Division of Migratory Bird Management in relative comfort of Arlington, Virginia.
