Sunday Great Backyard Bird Counting in West Virginia

I managed to get out for two counts today, with the following results:

- Site was my backyard.
All told, I tallied 115 individuals of 19 species. As of 10:15 PM (EST) my Belted Kingfisher is the first reported for Martinsburg by GBBC participants.

To the extent that this is the only (and perhaps former) Martinsburg bird blog online, its readers might be interested in the following observation.

On March 3, 2008, at approximately 5:30pm, a meandering wave of blackbirds and grackles darkened a non-insignificant sliver of the sky over Queen Street in downtown Martinsburg. From the ground, it seemed that the flock stretched from the Blue White Restaurant to the Catholic school, numbering many thousands of individuals.

It was a beautiful and hopeful thing to see on this first warm day in months.
